“Whether you want to uncover the secrets of the universe, or you just want to pursue a career in the 21st century, basic computer programming is an essential skill to learn.” — Stephen Hawking
Literacy in this modern age is not only measure by the ability to read and write on papers but also by computer literacy. Mason and McMarrow (2006) suggested that there are two distinct components to computer literacy: awareness and competence. Awareness requires a person to have understanding of how computers impact their day to day life as well as the larger society while competence is the ability to handle various computer operations.
To fully understand this topic, one has to first understand what a computer and programming is? The word computer is derived from Latin word ‘computare’ meaning to calculate or programmable machine. Therefore, a computer is a programmable machine.
What is programming? Programming is the process of creating a set of instructions that tells a computer how to perform a task. Programming can be done using a variety of computer “languages,” such as SQL, Java, Python, C++, and PHP etc.
Just like water, computer programming is indispensable in our everyday life. It is the foundation upon which the present day technology is built and either directly or indirectly we are all connected to the use of technology. This in turn has changed our modern world and our environment we live in has become even smaller as a direct result of it.
To me computer programming is the heart of 21st century modernization, and every sensible person will accede to this. We can watch movies, contact people across the world; work from anywhere just using a small hand held devices and the possibility have almost become infinite. We are able to achieve so much in so short space of time and it is hard to believe how we managed before without technology. We have to thank programmers because, without them coding, our social, our economy, our health, and our demographic environment would have been completely different.
It is most noteworthy that computer programming will take the lead of future technology, the validation of this point is premised on the research reported by Wikipedia “There is active research to make computers out of many promising new types of technology, such as optical computers, DNA computers, neural computers, and quantum computers……”
It is time for every living creatures to learn programming and making coding an everyday exercise-not only because of the immense opportunity but, because it can also be a rewarding career, as Steve Jobs famously explained, “Everyone in this country should learn how to program a computer… because it teaches you how to think.”
